It began its life as a Southern Pacific Railroad depot, way back in 1868. Back then, it was known as Davisville, but in 1907, the postmaster in the area just shortened the name to Davis, and it’s been that way since. Now, Davis is the largest city in Yolo County, with a population of just over 65,000, not counting the more than 5,500 on-campus students at UC Davis.
A young, vibrant and thriving community, Davis was named in 2010 as the second most educated city in the country, based on the percentage of residents with graduate degrees. The young face of Davis also lends itself to the city’s reputation as politically liberal and physically active. The city contains a bustling network of very well-used bike paths.
