One of the Greater Sacramento Area’s newest cities is Rancho Cordova, having only been incorporated in 2003. With a population of almost 65,000 people, this buzzing commuter hub also witnesses a daily influx of more than 55,000 employees, making Rancho Cordova the Sacramento area’s largest employment sub-center.
Of course, though the city was only incorporated in 2003, its history stretches back much further. In fact, Rancho Cordova started life as Mayhew’s Crossing in 1855, at the height of the great California Gold Rush. Since then, it has been known by many names, including Hangtown Crossing, Mayhew Station, Mills and Mills Station, even before Cordova, the name of the local vineyard, started appearing in the town’s various titles. Starting in the early 1900’s, the town was also called Cordova Vineyards, then Cordova Village, before finally being named Rancho Cordova in 1955, when a post office was finally established.
Today, Rancho Cordova is a thriving city, and it was recently recognized as one of northern California’s finest communities when, in 2010, it was presented with the “All-America City Award.”
