The largest city in Place County is Roseville, but this city of almost 120,000 residents didn’t always go by its current name. Even before the great California gold rush, Roseville was originally a stage coach station known simply as Griders. Before long, however, the railroad arrived, and Griders became Roseville Junction. Finally, after the post office opened there in 1864, the Junction part was dropped, and the settlement was called simply Roseville.
Today, the city covers a total area of just under 37 square miles and is part of the greater Sacramento Metropolitan Area. With both Interstate 80 and State Route 65 bisecting the city, Roseville is a busy transporation hub and commercial center.
