Originally known as Yolo City, the thriving county seat of Yolo County has for many years been known by its current name, Woodland. This vibrant, youthful community’s origins trace back to 1850 and the establishment of both California as a state and Yolo as a county. James Monroe’s efforts meant the area located about 15 miles northwest of the capital city, Sacramento, was well irrigated, and the people that rushed to the area to try their hand at farming also found the soil to be rich and fertile.
In the middle of the 19th century, the Yolo county seat was Washington (today known as West Sacramento), but when that town was flooded, the official county seat moved to Woodland. The name Yolo City came from a man named Henry Wyckoff who built a store in 1853 and called it Yolo City. The area really began to thrive in 1857, after Frank Freeman bought the store and a parcel of 160 acres of land, plots of which he gave away free of charge to anyone who would clear the land and build a house on it.
Today, Woodland continues to grow rapidly, with a population of more than 55,000 citizens, a number of new subdivisions on the east side of town and plans afoot for a new elementary and middle school.
