Maria was a 55-year-old cleaning lady who made it her practice to walk to work every day. On her way home from work one day, she was walking along the sidewalk when the driver of a tool truck pulled out of a parking lot without looking and hit her. The truck driver did not realize he had struck Maria and dragged her nearly twenty-five feet until he finally stopped in the middle of the street. Maria was seriously injured and suffered broken ribs, a broken leg, a fractured knee cap, and had scarring on the lower part of her legs.
