In the early summer of 2021, Jessica’s life was shattered in an instant. After a fun-filled day at the beach with her husband and two young children, the family was nearly home when their family SUV was blindsided at a four-way intersection in Citrus Heights, Sacramento County. A reckless driver, speeding at 40-45 mph, blew through a stop sign and slammed into the passenger side of Jessica’s vehicle, flipping it over with such force that the children were left dangling upside down in their car seats.
Jessica’s screams pierced the air as she realized her arm was crushed beneath the roof of the flipped car. Her husband, initially unconscious, awoke to Jessica’s screams and their children’s cries. Doctors made every possible effort to save her limb, including using arteries from her legs to restore blood flow, but the damage to her arm was irreversible. Jessica ultimately underwent a below-the-elbow amputation and extensive skin grafting. She spent nearly a month hospitalized, returning home to a life forever changed by the tragic crash.
