- Malunion: This occurs when the broken bone heals at an angle, in a rotated position or a shortened position.
- Nonunion: When a bone breaks, it may not heal completely at the jagged ends of the break. It can also result in infection and decreased blood flow. Bone graft surgery is usually required to correct this complication.
- Osteomyelitis: Compound fractures in which the bone protrudes from the skin, exposing the bone to the environment, are susceptible to this infection.
- Nerve injury: The peripheral nervous system runs throughout the body, and when a bone is fractured near a nerve bundle, it may destroy the nerve bundle as well, resulting in pain, numbness and other symptoms.
- Blood vessel injury: Like the nervous system, veins and arteries are spread out through the body and can be damaged in an accident that causes a bone fracture.
- Osteoarthritis: In accidents where the bone is crushed into many pieces, this chronic condition may develop, leading to a lifetime of pain.
- Complex Regional Pain Syndrome: This condition results in constant, excruciating pain years after a bone fracture has healed.
